Franz Schubert, who rarely owned a violin, created music of wonderful intimacy for this instrument. Though not a virtuoso in the conventional sense of the term, he was nevertheless a master of expressive music. Like his works for piano, his pieces for violin and piano open up that sphere of elsewhere, where the earthly merges with transcendence. In their dialogue, the contrasting worlds of the violin — the “fragmented sound” — and the piano — the “legato melody” — come together in a lyrical unity that does not “represent” anything, but simply is. Between 1816 and 1817, Schubert composed four sonatas in which he drew inspiration from Mozart while tracing his own path. Behind the cheerful façade of these “sonatas” often lies a profound gravity. The young composer metamorphoses the classical form into a realm of ethereal harmony, where melody takes the place of motivic development — music as feeling, not as construction. In the Sonata in A major of 1817, this principle reaches pure lyricism: heaven and earth brush against each other without ever becoming one. Ten years later, two late masterpieces came into being: the Rondo brillant in B minor (1826) and the Fantasy in C major (1827). Both are dedicated to the young violinist Josef Slawjk, whose virtuosity inspired Schubert to a profound intellectual exploration of brilliance. Behind the shimmering surface of the Rondo lies a mysterious abyss: Paganini’s “demonic spirit” appears transfigured into an angelic voice. In the Fantasy, Schubert finally transcends all formal boundaries. The work, which incorporates the lied “Sei mir gegrüßt” into its structure, becomes a musical symbol of farewell and redemption. Virtuosic gestures turn into existential expression; the love song resounds like a distant memory, between dream, death, and transcendence. This music is not a concert work, but a poetic revelation: Schubert’s “music of the spheres,” in which the “here” and the “there” become one, for an instant.
