A curious trajectory indeed for Nicola, Dominique, Stéphane and Dimitri, for whom it all began one evening in 1981 at the Rose Bonbon, the trendy Paris club of the New Wave years... Pale faces, blood-red lips, deconstructed suits, exotic synths and bouncy rhythms: the whole essence and style of Indochine were already there. Hit after hit, these four, whom some saw as nothing more than a pale “Made In France” copy of the Cure, nevertheless won growing rock recognition. Outpacing Téléphone, they claimed the title of top French band in 1985 with the album 3 (“3ème sexe”, “Canary Bay”, “3 nuits par semaine”, “Salômbo”...), followed by the more controversial “7 000 danses” (1987). Even Gainsbourg, always on the lookout for a good media coup, teamed up with them for the “Tes yeux noirs” video. The quartet, now a trio after Dimitri’s departure, duly celebrated their 10th anniversary with a Birthday album. But the success of this compilation was not enough to halt the inevitable decline or to establish the following album, Un jour dans notre vie (1993), though successful and innovative. Will Unita reopen the doors of success for Indochine? We’ll be able to find out at the start of the new season, with the release of a new album.
