"The mute cornet, whose mouthpiece resembles that of the cornet but is hollowed out in the instrument, has a very soft and tender sound. For this reason, it is called the mute cornet." Four instruments preserved today in Leipzig, miraculous survivors from the impressive lost collections of the court of Kassel, formed the starting point of a doctoral thesis led by Lambert Colson. We can now trace the entire journey of these instruments: their manufacture by great Venetian makers, their acquisition by Moritz Von Hessen (the famous patron of the young Heinrich Schütz!), the names of the musicians who played them, as well as the music performed by this mysterious cousin of the cornet. This recording will feature copies of historical instruments in mostly unpublished music from the court of Kassel, at the Accademia Filarmonica in Verona.
