Each, a soloist in their own right, under the direction of Gawain Glenton has put together a fascinating snapshot of the musical landscape at the height of the Hanseatic League. The maritime nations of Northern Europe have always been connected: from London to Tallinn via Lübeck, Hamburg, Bremen and the ports of the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. The sixteenth and seventeenth-century composer / performers on this recording each looked beyond their own shores, to a sense of shared European culture and understanding. Andrew Keeling’s new work, Northern Soul, was specially commissioned to complement this programme.
