NEW ALBUM by the up-and-coming Tuareg band GRUFF RHYS (SUPER FURRY ANIMALS), A. AG ALHOUSSEYNI (TINARIWEN), M. AG ATLALE aka JAPONAIS and SULAFA ELYAS
Since their first album (2015), IMARHAN has established itself as an emblem of the new Tuareg generation by breathing new life into Assouf. Designated as the spiritual sons of TINARIWEN (with whom they regularly play), the quintet from TAMANRASSET manipulates the rituals and ancestral traditions of their culture. By bringing together the legendary poet Japonais (recently deceased) and the musician-storyteller Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, Imarhan aims to unite. When they record with Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals, their brilliant and universal songwriting takes on its full meaning here. By inviting the Sudanese singer Sulafa Elyas, it becomes clear that Imarhan is open to all of Africa, defenders of the Tuareg people, but above all spokespersons for the new African generation. They speak of the connection to nature, of oppression, of lost youth, but also and above all of hope and struggle, set to sandy guitar riffs, enchanting choruses, and lyrics in the form of poetry of vast spaces.
