If the true identity of Il Fasolo - literally the Bean, known as the "Retiree of the Academy of the Capricious"! - remains obscure (see the remarkable CD booklet on this subject), he nonetheless appears as an emblematic figure of a period of tremendous upheaval that will gradually see the triumph of the still-nascent genre of opera. The works gathered here provide a panorama of the early stammerings of this emerging genre, works for one or more voices, precursors of recitar cantando or legacies of the tradition of serenate, comedic madrigals, or Carnival pieces that will form its foundations. The interpretation by Le Poème Harmonique under Vincent Dumestre is once again absolutely remarkable, both for its musicological rigor and its liveliness.
