Paderewski and Godowski, two great representatives of the romantic piano tradition, who were also composers, have works that are still significant enough to be performed by virtuosos today. They both belong to the generation of musicians for whom it was important to play their own compositions alongside those of others during concerts. Nelson Goerner has taken on the challenge of performing some of the most remarkable and difficult pieces by Paderewski, "Variations and Fugue Op. 23," and Godowski's "Symphonic Metamorphoses," both of which are anthology pieces that few pianists dare to tackle. It certainly requires exceptional technique.
