Hugh Masekela was one of the best horn players in the world, a musical celebrity who forged a global reputation through his unique blend of jazz, South African styles, and music from the African continent and the diaspora. A powerful singer and songwriter, he used his music to attack apartheid, and after returning to a free South Africa after 30 years of exile, he continued to be a frank commentator on global events. The albums that Masekela recorded during this period, from 1966 to 1976, made him an excellent horn player and a powerful singer, and his songs ranged from exquisite to violent and experimental. It may seem extraordinary that these pieces were allowed to disappear, but this remarkable set helps to remedy that. Compiled by Hugh and his friend and producer Stewart Levine, it includes tracks from eleven albums, with two of the best - Masekela Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz and 'I Am Not Afraid - reissued in full.
