Pianist, arranger, and composer, Horace Silver undoubtedly belongs in the category of great jazz musicians. Perhaps even one of the most prolific of the jazz greats when you look at his resume! Horace Silver played a key role as a sideman for almost all the big names in jazz and spent 28 years as the leader of his own group on the Blue Note label. A list of the great players he accompanied should include Stan Getz, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Lou Donaldson (who helped develop his understanding of be-bop), Sonny Stitt, Art Farmer, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Donald Byrd, Clifford Jordan, and Milt Jackson. And not to mention the Jazz Messengers with whom Horace played alongside co-founder Art Blakey and with men such as Hank Mobley and Louis Hayes. Here, we present Horace in a trio from early 1952 where he is joined by Curly Russell, Gene Ramey, and Art Blakey. We also find Horace in his classic Quintet format where we can hear him with Hank Mobley, Kenny Dorham, Doug Watkins, Art Blakey, Blue Mitchell, Gene Taylor, Roy Brooks, and on "Horace-Scope" and "The Tokyo".
