Holy Hive released two albums and an EP, Harping, within three years before disbanding. In 2019, they recorded Harping with Mary Lattimore in just a few days. They released their first album Float Back To You in 2020, which instantly became a classic and defined their unique "folk soul" sound. The tender falsetto of frontman Paul Spring and his sniper-like guitar playing, along with the incomparable drumming and production of Homer Steinweiss, proved to be a perfect match. Spring and Steinweiss took their sound and pushed it forward on their second album, maintaining the foundation they had established while exploring new avenues. Big Crown Vaults Vol. 3: Holy Hive delves into the treasure trove of unreleased recordings and extracts some that have never seen the light of day on vinyl. These recordings were largely made during the sessions for their two albums, with some recorded even before they signed with Big Crown. The compilation kicks off with the track that started it all for the label, their stunning cover of the Invincibles' "This Is My Story," which previously only existed on a 45 RPM record. "Love It Is Not Love," "Middle Of The Night," "Celeste," and their cover of "Kingdom Of The Sun" feature the vocals of Shanny from The Shacks. On "The Shame," Robin Pecknold from Fleet Foxes plays bass, and El Michels Affair plays flute, also appearing on "A Perfect Space." Paul Spring performs the Irish folk song "Red Is The Rose" in a traditional style, with just him singing and playing acoustic guitar. The compilation ends poetically with "End Of Time."
