Gebel’s biographer, Ernst Stöckl, indicated that although there were at least three string quartets by Gebel, he knew only one of them, the Quartet in D major, which was published by the Peters publishing house in Leipzig in 1817-1818. Stöckl was unable to find later quartet compositions by Gebel, which had nevertheless been mentioned by critics of the time at concerts, despite persistent research and inquiries in Russian libraries. In fact, it was a real stroke of luck when we discovered the printed music of the hitherto unknown Quartet in E-flat major. The score, which was printed in Moscow around 1840, was found by chance in the Hanover City Library.
