The Highwaymen were a country music supergroup composed of four of the greatest outlaw country artists: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. The group was active from 1985 to 1995. In 1984, Glen Campbell first played the song "Highwayman" for Johnny Cash. The four musicians were gathered in Switzerland for a television special and decided to collaborate on a joint project. During the recording of their first album, Marty Stuart again played the song for Cash, stating that it would be perfect for them: four verses, four souls, and four musicians. The quartet found the name for their new supergroup, "The Highwaymen," the name of their first album, "Highwayman," and that of their first single. It was an ideal name for them, as they were constantly on the road and all four embodied the outlaw image in country music. The album and the single both reached number one on the country charts.
