Before becoming a benchmark of French dub, High Tone was a bubbling sonic laboratory. Released in 2001 on Jarring Effects, Bass Temperature is not a classic album but a compilation of three foundational EPs by the group, released between 1998 and 2001. An immersion in the evolution of the Lyon sound, between deep basslines, hallucinatory textures, and sharp beats. The record opens with the Bass Temperature EP and its emblematic Echo Logik, where a sample from the film Little Big Man blends with a hypnotic groove. Train to TranSylvania summons a cinematic universe populated by specters, between dub rises and dark steppa flights. With Low Tone (1999), the group refines its identity: The Orientalist and Hempro 905 set up misty atmospheres with ethnic accents, while N°1 Station flirts with techno. Finally, Bot Bud Season (1998), the group’s first release, bursts with raw energy. Special mention to Dubiously, a true dub missile that is still devastating today.
