Hervé Niquet Created in 1802 at the Paris Opera, Sémiramis by Charles-Simon Catel embodies, along with a few other works of the time, the renewal of the lyric tragedy inherited from Gluck. Tinged with exoticism, accentuating the pathos of isolation as much as the pomp of ambitious finales, the work bows out of the "Louis XVI" style to announce grand romantic opera, through the prism of what is commonly called neo-classicism. But the time was ripe for controversies between defenders and detractors of the new Conservatory, where Catel, then well established, had made so many enemies that the parterre of the Opera trembled with vengeful hostility when the curtain rose on the first act...Hervé Niquet and his Concert Spirituel, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, continue their tireless work of recovering forgotten lyric tragedies (let us mention their Callirhoé by Destouches, Sémélé by Marais, Proserpine by Lully and Andromaque by Grétry) with this recording of Catel's Sémiramis made during the Radio France Festival in Montpellier in July 2011. Thanks to Niquet's infallible flair when choosing his voices - let us note among others Maria Riccarda Wesseling and Andrew Foster-Williams - this new volume of the lyric tragedy series will dazzle, once again, lovers of the finest French music.Recorded live on July 25, 2011 at the Opéra Berlioz, Le Corum in Montpellier
