Tinged with exoticism, emphasizing the pathos of isolation as much as the pomp of ambitious finales, the work bids farewell to the “Louis XVI” style to announce the great romantic opera, through the prism of what is commonly called neoclassicism. But the time was one of polemics between defenders and detractors of the new Conservatoire, where Catel, then well established, had made so many enemies that the Opéra pit shuddered with vengeful hostility when the curtain rose on the first act... Hervé Niquet and his Concert Spirituel, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, continue their tireless work of reviving forgotten lyric tragedies (to mention for the record their Callirhoé by Destouches, Sémélé by Marais, Proserpine by Lully and Andromaque by Grétry) with this recording of Catel’s Sémiramis made during the Festival de Radio France in Montpellier in July 2011. Thanks to Niquet’s unfailing flair in choosing his voices - notably Maria Riccarda Wesseling and Andrew Foster-Williams - this new volume in the lyric tragedy series will once again dazzle lovers of the finest French music.
