Martini rose to fame at the Court of France and gained the favor of the sovereigns. Appointed Superintendent of the King's Music in 1788, he fled France during the Terror and returned triumphantly to Paris with his opera Sapho. He was reinstated in his position as Superintendent by Louis XVIII in 1815! The same year saw the first performance of his Requiem on the occasion of the transfer of the remains of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to the Royal Basilica. This spectacular work for soloists, orchestra, and choir captures the essence of Empire music... to celebrate the Monarchy! Hervé Niquet gives this work, so symbolic of the history of France and Versailles, a resurrection that brings Martini back into the light of the last royal splendors.
