If Fauré's Requiem is a monument of French sacred music, Gounod's Messe de Clovis is much less known. It was composed starting in 1891 in homage to Clovis who, like Joan of Arc, became a protective figure after the defeat of 1870 against Prussia... These two works share a collected and intimate character, like a return to the purity of Gregorian chant. This does not detract from the jubilant nature of Fauré's Requiem: "this warm and lush sound material leads to the elevation of the spirit," says Hervé Niquet. The version recorded here is from 1893, in an orchestration without violins or woodwinds. A new version with a large orchestra will be released in July 1900. O salutaris by Louis Aubert (1877-1968) for soprano, violin, harp, organ, and choir, and L’Adagio for violin and organ by André Caplet (1878-1925) complete this program, co-produced with the Palazzetto Bru Zane and fervently performed by the Concert Spirituel.
