Hailing from two coastal towns, Englishman Stephen Fitzpatrick and Norwegian Audun Laading met while studying in Liverpool. The two bonded over a sarcastic sense of humor and a keen observational perspective on their surroundings. Making Her’s the natural extension of their friendship, the whimsical duo presents their debut album Invitation to Her’s, blending jangle pop, chillwave, and slack rock. While the first single "Love On The Line (Call Now)" celebrates the fleeting joys of a simulated romance, the second single "Low Beam" comments on the toxicity of masculinity, seen through the eyes of a sensitive biker who feels out of place in the gang. The pair also questions the boundary between madness and reality with a 1950s film noir aesthetic. In the same spirit, the surreal, striking, and always unexpected series The Twilight Zone has heavily influenced their writing. Their voracious consumption of music from all genres and eras resonates in their mutant retro-futuristic sound. With bright guitar lines, unstoppable melodies, and languid, charming vocals, they deliver an arty slack rock tinged with dream pop, technicolor tropicalia, and 80s R&B. It’s a joyful mess on a summer day at the beach where the Strokes try to sunbathe nonchalantly while Mac DeMarco eagerly jumps on sandcastles, Girls splash passersby stealthily, and Ariel Pink indulges in a slightly messy, sweet, and fruity ice cream. Not far away, Fern Kinney plays volleyball while The Smiths enjoy the nudist area. Eccentric yet charismatic, the duo delivers with Invitation to Her’s one of the most free-spirited and inspired debut albums the English isle has seen in quite some time.
