For this 3rd batch of the Karajan edition, the recordings dedicated to Sibelius made with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the turn of the 70s-80s are gathered in a 4CD box set. Karajan explores the mysteries of 5 symphonies and 5 symphonic poems, revealing their structures and bringing out their exhilarating power with all the richness of the Berlin sound. A second box set of concertos follows the one released in March, covering the period 1970-1984 in 10CDs. An incredible array of soloists can be found: Sviatoslav Richter, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Alexis Weissenberg, Maurice André, and James Galway, along with the legendary recording of Beethoven's triple concerto (with Richter, Oistrakh, and Rostropovich, one of the absolute best sellers in classical music). Finally, the 3rd box set contains recordings made between 1949 and 1960 and produced by Walter Legge, mainly with the Philharmonia Orchestra. The repertoire is very varied, ranging from Handel's Water Music to Bartók's brilliant Concerto for Orchestra, including Debussy's La Mer, Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, or the famous recordings of Intermezzi (Mascagni, Puccini...), and rarities like Roussel's Symphony No. 4.
