Pneuma is a cycle of eight compositions by double bassist and composer Henry Fraser, released on Kou Records. Exploring breath, resonance, and the evolving relationship between form and improvisation, Fraser conceives his solo practice as a collaboration with the instrument itself. He works directly with the materiality and acoustic properties of the double bass, allowing sound, space, and structure to emerge simultaneously through attentive listening. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Thurston Moore) and Ben Greenberg (Uniform, Marc Ribot), the album enriches Fraser's solo musical language through an extended melodic register, layered textures, and finely crafted studio interventions. Drawing on both pre-composed motifs and improvisations, Pneuma unfolds as a series of concise movements, each giving shape to a distinct rhythmic or harmonic idea while contributing to a continuous overall form. Captured with particular attention to natural dynamics and spatial details, the recording preserves the full physical presence of the instrument, highlighting the resonance, harmonics, and subtle micro-movements of the bass. Some pieces are built from multiple layered performances, significantly expanding the scale and expressive palette of the music. The result is a listening experience that is both intimate and immersive: an acoustic music that reveals itself as simultaneously tactile and expansive. Pneuma bears witness to Fraser's artistic clarity, reaffirming his commitment to process-oriented composition and attentive sonic practice.
