Helga Gabriel's career began in the heart of the Swedish forests in 2018. Her first two EPs allowed her to explore the darker, hazier direction her writing was taking, although she had already hinted at the quiet power of her voice in a folk-pop duo. But it wasn't until this child of the forest moved to the north of England that HELGA truly took shape. ‘Wrapped in Mist’ is not only HELGA's debut album, it's also her first release on Season of Mist and the first time Helga has written within a real band. While Cai Sumption (guitar), Cameron Gledhill (guitar) and Ryan Fairclough (bass) grew up obsessed with pop-punk, they started playing together in a Modest Mouse-inspired band. Reinforced by the arrival of Sami Javed, HELGA weaves links between baroque pop, industrial rock, medieval folk and progressive metal. Sometimes within the same track, such as "Burden" which plunges into a distorted groove before bursting into a luminous chorus, to end with a post-rock coda inspired by the band's budding friendship. HELGA is only just beginning. But already, this young band is proving to be a refreshing force to be reckoned with.
