An interpreter-songwriter (and occasionally, author) devoted to poetry; since her beginnings in the cabarets of the left bank (L'Ecluse) where she was the first to interpret Serge Gainsbourg, she has lent her voice to the great poets of the 20th century, from Louis Aragon to Luc Bérimont, including René Char and especially Jean Genet (The Condemned to Death, covered by Etienne Daho). Dignified, demanding, and uncompromising, Hélène Martin has always contributed to keeping the flame of sung poetry alive, in a sober, almost austere style.
