L'Amant jaloux

Description

With L’Amant jaloux, created in Versailles in 1778, André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry delivers one of the most refined masterpieces of French opéra-comique. At the crossroads of theater and music, this "comedy mixed with ariettes" elegantly explores the universal themes of jealousy, pretense, and arranged marriages, in a plot where misunderstandings and emotions unfold with remarkable fluidity. Driven by a luminous and expressive musical writing, the work testifies to Grétry's dramatic genius, a master in the art of making music and words converse. Its colorful and agile orchestration embraces the prosody of the text and brings to life deeply human characters, sometimes touching, sometimes comical. Considered from its creation as a model of the genre, L’Amant jaloux will have more than 150 performances before remaining in the repertoire until the mid-19th century.
This new interpretation brings together Arion Orchestre Baroque under the direction of Mathieu Lussier, a major figure in the revival of early music in Canada. Surrounded by an exceptional cast including sopranos Magali Simard-Galdès and Hélène Guilmette, as well as tenors Pierre Derhet and Artavazd Sargsyan, the ensemble restores all its liveliness and modernity to this work where humor, tenderness, and dramatic tension coexist with finesse. Produced in partnership with the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, this project is part of a desire to promote the French lyrical heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries to today's audiences.
