After recording Brahms's First Concerto, it took Hélène Grimaud about fifteen years to tackle the Second, the first Brahms work she ever heard. A work she acknowledges is physically and psychologically necessary for her. Her relationship with the Second Concerto is more complex, and also paradoxical. For a long time, it seemed less essential to her than the First. Yet it was unimaginable for her never to approach it. The First Concerto was recorded with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Second with the Vienna Philharmonic. This is the first time Hélène Grimaud has recorded with the prestigious Viennese orchestra. Two ensembles, but one conductor: Andris Nelsons, whom the pianist admires and with whom she is connected.
