Schütz : Becker Psalter

The compositions inspired in Schütz by the Psalter of Cornelius Becker (SWV 97-256) are less known and certainly much less spectacular than other scores, particularly the Psalms of David (SWV 22-47). However, they are nonetheless interesting when placed in their context and linked to the purpose of their creation: the text versified by Becker is set to music by a composer who, for familial and social reasons, seeks to express himself through simpler forms, intended to be easily sung in the most modest assemblies; the strophic form predominates, and the polyphony is economical yet expressive, reflecting the adherence of the greatest number to the Reformation through this completed form of the chorale. Hence the success of these works, which saw three editions during Schütz's lifetime. This recording by his preferred interpreters does not deviate in any way from the excellence of the interpretation that characterizes this reference edition. It easily convinces us that simplicity is not deprivation, let alone indigence. The choice of psalms, identical to those selected for the Psalms of David, makes it an excellent complement to this previous edition as well as a testament to the versatility of the German baroque master.
