Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr.; March 1, 1927 – April 25, 2023) was an American singer, actor, and activist who popularized calypso music to an international audience in the 1950s. He is one of the few performers to have received an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony (EGOT), although he won the Oscar in a non-competitive category. Belafonte made his breakthrough with the album Calypso (1956), which was the first LP to sell a million copies by a single artist. Belafonte at Carnegie Hall is a double live album and is the first of two Belafonte Carnegie Hall albums, recorded on April 19 and 20, 1959. The concerts were benefits for the New Lincoln School and the Wiltwyck School. The album remained on the charts for over three years.
