As one of the founders of Philadelphia soul, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes played and recorded for a few decades, but the musical highlight of their career must have been when Teddy Pendergrass joined the ranks between 1972 and 1975. Wake Up Everybody from 1975 is the last album featuring his sensual voice before he embarked on a solo career, and it is filled with deep, uplifting, and inspiring songs that, in some cases, are better known for their covers than for their originals. The song "Wake Up Everybody" was a radio hit for John Legend & The Roots, and "Don't Leave Me This Way" is a disco classic that was made even bigger by Thelma Houston.
