Born into an extremely talented musical family, Hank Jones began studying piano at a very young age. His mother was a beautiful singer, his two sisters also played piano, and his two brothers would become great jazz musicians in their own right, trumpeter Thad Jones and the extraordinary drummer Elvin Jones who became a member of John Coltrane's classic group. Hank's early influences were quite predictable for the time, Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Fats Waller, and of course Art Tatum. Hank Jones had a very long career as a jazz musician both as a sideman, accompanist, and bandleader under his own name. The list of those he has not played with would probably be much shorter to make than that of those he has played with. Some of the musicians on such a list would include Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Billy Eckstine, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Charlie Parker.
