When it comes to the late works of Jan Dismas Zelenka, we usually think of his fascinating last Masses, Oratorios, or Litanies, which have now gained the attention and recognition they deserve. But among his late works are also some secular vocal compositions like the Serenade Il Diamante and a collection of Italian Arias. Throughout the 1720s, Zelenka primarily composed sacred music for the Catholic Church; he likely did not have the opportunity to write "Italian music." After the death of Johann David Heinichen, Zelenka officially applied for the position of Kapellmeister in 1733, writing a collection of 8 Italian arias to try to prove his ability to compose in a galant and secular style, as the court sought to restore opera in Dresden. This is the first complete recording of the 8 Italian Arias.
