Created in 1813, Les Abencérages by Cherubini heralds the spectacle and excess of grand romantic opera. From the gardens of the Alhambra to the battlefield, the action effectively intertwines political plots and sentimental idyll. Driven by the energy and colors of historical instruments, this recording reveals the modernity of the work and its musical qualities. Anaïs Constans bravely tackles the demanding role of Noraïme, while Edgaras Montvidas showcases his lyrical tenor voice in sublime arias, the beauty of which Roberto Alagna himself had anticipated during a recital released in 2003. Surrounding them, a plethora of soloists (Dolié, Sargsyan, Williams, Martin, Lavoie, etc.) uphold the quality of the French language and style with the same rigor. Hungarian conductor György Vashegyi, accompanied by the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, once again brings to light an essential milestone of French romantic opera.
