Gustav Leonhardt's conviction was strengthened by the exchanges he maintained with a diverse and open group of musicians, playing on period instruments or copies of all types of works by composers as varied as Byrd, Purcell, Rameau, Johann Sebastian Bach, or Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Let us not forget, in passing, his 1970 recording of "Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda" by Monteverdi, which had never been reissued before. It is clear: the image of a pope of early music reclusive in his ivory tower and rigidly adhering to strict principles does not hold up for long when listening to this collection, to which are added the recordings made later for the Veritas series by Virgin.
