At age 40, he composes his first symphony, which achieves a success of esteem in his native region. Beethoven, for Bruckner, is one of his deep inspirations for his first work. It is in 1871 that he begins his second symphony. Two years later, the symphony is premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The reviews are certainly positive here and there, but the expected success is still not forthcoming. But the composer will of course persevere. François-Xavier Roth chooses the first versions of the two symphonies and thus shows the richness of ideas and the impetuosity of Bruckner's experimentation.
