Himalaya

Description

The cosmopolitan citizen draws his strength from ancient Chinese culture. In the title of this new solo album, Guo Gan evokes a film by Jérôme Ségur, Himalaya Face aux abeilles Géantes, about the lives of honey gatherers in the Himalayas, for which he composed and performed the music. An undisputed virtuoso, he offers a reinterpretation of the classical repertoire as well as his original compositions inspired by his Chinese experiences: from age-old culture with Peking opera or shadow theater, childhood memories of popular performances in the Shaaxi region in northern China. Guo Gan, whose courtesy name is Yi-zhen, was born in China, in the city of Shenyang. With the elegance and virtuosity that characterize him, Guo Gan has already done much to popularize the erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument, throughout the world. This has earned him an international reputation that has led him to play with artists as prestigious as Lang Lang, Didier Lockwood, Yvan Cassar, Gabriel Yried, Jean François Zygel. When it comes to showcasing his favored instrument, Guo Gan adapts with mastery to all repertoires, all ensembles, all venues, and all audiences, without ever straying completely from his Chinese musical roots.
