The passion of Guido Balestracci for the consort of viols and the amplification of his repertoire, particularly towards Italian music, shines in his 1999 recording, Seconde Stravaganze, reissued by Glossa Cabinet. Determined to push boundaries with an "extravagance" not devoid of deep meditation, Balestracci (and his ensemble L'Amoroso, including viols, harp, keyboards, and percussion) offers a wonderful program of Venetian and Neapolitan works. Designed for voice, organ, harpsichord, or viols by Gesualdo, Trabaci, Del Buono, Montalbano, Legrenzi, Storace, and other composers of the Cinquecento and Seicento, these pieces are revisited by Balestracci and his musicians through a series of metamorphoses that maintain the freshness of the time of their creation and that of their recording, three decades ago.
