Description

After studying at the University of Leipzig and several years as an organist at the Nikolai Church in the city, the Saxon musician Johann Rosenmüller had to abruptly leave his position around 1655 for less than honorable reasons. He eventually found his way to Venice, where he worked at St. Mark's Basilica and the famous Ospedale della Pietà. Among the many musical "souvenirs" he later brought back from the South was a new style of church music, infused with a vibrant color previously unknown in the more austere musical traditions of the North. It is no wonder that the faithful felt as if they were hearing angelic choirs and left the sacred concerts with renewed faith. This musica coelestis continues to win over pure hearts and inspire a better life, even 340 years after the death of the great composer.
