This first album by the supergroup formed by Americans David Crosby (ex Byrds), Steve Stills (ex Buffalo Springfield) and Englishman Graham Nash (ex Hollies) is a masterstroke, essentially thanks to the magical vocal harmonies of the three singers. Stills runs the show (he plays almost all the instruments) and writes the superb “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Helplessly Hoping” and, in collaboration with Crosby, “Wooden Ship.” The latter offers the incredible “Guinnevere” (complex layered vocal harmonies) and the very rock “Long Time Gone.” Nash’s more pop-oriented compositions have aged less well, but the whole remains exceptional and perfectly encapsulates the cool spirit that prevailed in California at the time.
