Trained by Mozart and Beethoven, Johann Nepomuk Hummel enjoyed a very high reputation in his time as a composer and virtuoso performer. His piano trios are characterized by their rich sonority, good humor, and graceful melodic inventiveness. Even if Beethoven’s influence can be heard, Hummel’s own creativity is highly distinctive. The Piano Trio op. 1, an early work, breathes the atmosphere of Vienna at the turn of the 19th century, and the Grand Trio, dedicated to Johann Baptist Cramer, is a concerto without bearing the name.
