This volume concludes the complete cycle of Sibelius’s symphonies conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali, at the helm of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. This series of recordings, which has received a large number of awards around the world, ends in apotheosis with two major symphonies by the composer: “we hear music carried by forms of gravitational energy evoking those that govern the course of a river,” writes Andrew Mellor in the liner notes. As a complement, Rouvali has chosen eight excerpts from The Tempest, incidental music inspired by Shakespeare’s work.
