By projecting in technicolor the influences of Morricone, Barry, or Portishead onto our willing retinas, Golfrapp's first album (Felt Mountain, 2000) left a lasting impression. Will the same be true for Black Cherry as Allison Goldfrapp and her partner Will Gregory seem to have aimed to renew their image as musical filmmakers? The cover is one clue, the sound is another: after shooting in wide-angle, Goldfrapp is more inclined to use DV to capture a sound that is distinctly more technological, sexy, and urban. This creates a beautiful contrast with Allison's voice, which, while retaining its grand qualities, becomes more mischievous and sensual. The result of long hours of electronic improvisation, Black Cherry deepens the message and refreshes, with undeniable class, a formula that would have been too simple to reproduce. How can one not think of the Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder encounter on "Strict Machine"? How can one not nod along to the lascivious "Train"? How can one not feel A. Goldfrapp's newfound emancipation flowing through the track "Twist"? Once, we were content to dream in the presence of this music. Now we have the right to dance. Black Cherry: a sound mind in a sound body.
