Godspeed You! Black Emperor returns with a new soundtrack for our era, as only this venerable and inimitable Canadian ensemble knows how to forge. As suggested by the heretical anarcho-punk spirit of the title G_d’s Pee at State’s End!, GY!BE delivers raw power through two long, fascinating 20-minute pieces of large-scale noise post-rock. An unrelenting breath bursts into a multitude of sounds, as some of the most fiery and intense melodies of the band ricochet and converge amidst counterpoints of violin and double bass. Field recordings and tumultuous semi-improvised passages frame these fervent epics. Two shorter, independent pieces of 6 minutes reveal devastating, enchanting, elegiac beauty. Poignant atmospheres, noisy orchestrations, drone, hypnotic crescendos, layered distorted sounds: the album encapsulates all the beloved facets of the group. Twenty-five years later, this new album is as vital, moving, relevant, and relentless as on the first day. G_d’s Pee at State’s End! was recorded and mixed in Montreal in October 2020 at the band’s reference studio, Thee Mighty Hotel2Tango, by Jace Lasek, the award-winning veteran independent producer (and co-founder of The Besnard Lakes) who is working with Godspeed for the first time.
