There is a British radio show called "Desert Island" in which celebrities choose eight pieces of music they would like to listen to after being shipwrecked on a deserted island. Glenn Gould never participated in the show, but he once stated that if he were on an isolated island, all he would want is Bach. In reality, Gould appeared several times on the show, but as a choice of certain guests rather than as a guest himself. Writers, actors, scientists, painters: all seem to gravitate around Bach, whose work remains the golden thread of Western music. Gould was an elusive and reclusive man, perhaps better equipped than others to live in the wilderness. One can imagine him scratching a fictional keyboard on a piece of driftwood, flexing his fingers, closing his eyes, and settling in to play the opening "Aria" of the Goldberg Variations. The modern castaway may find themselves in a city apartment rather than on an isolated island. Bach and Gould remain the best means of survival and escape.
