The most complete collection available of the improvisations and transcriptions of a virtuoso from the Romantic school. Born in 1915, American pianist Earl Wild was known to most listeners as a specialist in the lineage of Romantic pianist-composers from Chopin to Rachmaninoff. However, Wild was also a masterful improviser—in the tradition of the composers he played—and he wrote (and recorded) many of them to leave a substantial legacy of transcriptions, fantasies, and paraphrases, as well as original works for piano. Recorded between 2013 and 2018, this is the first and so far the only complete collection of Wild's piano music. It opens with deeply affectionate transcriptions of poetic slow movements from Marcello to Fauré. Wild's Piano Sonata dates from 2000, by which time he had been playing and composing for over 70 years. Cast in the three traditional movements, it is brought up to date with a spectacular final toccata "in the style of Ricky Martin." An album of transcriptions of Rachmaninoff's songs showcases Wild's deep sympathy for the composer's language. These original reworkings blend the vocal line with the accompaniment and are enriched with additional preludes and postludes in the manner of Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert. Wild knew Rachmaninoff, often heard him play, and was acquainted with Russian soprano Maria Kurenko, who had worked with the composer on his songs and shared the knowledge she had gained. Wild could dazzle an audience with pyrotechnic keyboard pieces like few others, as shown by the rest of the collection: études and fantasies on Gershwin; transcriptions of Handel, Saint-Saëns, and Tchaikovsky; and finally his own version of a Mexican hat dance. When these recordings first appeared on Piano Classics, they received critical acclaim. "Giovanni Doria Miglietta seems completely in tune with the idiom, even though these works were not always familiar to him. He has the technique to navigate all the notes effortlessly, and he has a good instrument on which he produces a beautiful sound, with a strong tone that never becomes overpowering, and well captured by the recording" (MusicWeb International).
