“Per il Luigi,” the seventeenth volume of the Haydn 2032 complete edition, is devoted to some of Joseph Haydn’s earliest symphonies, in which the composer wanted to showcase the talent of the musicians who had joined the Esterházy prince’s court orchestra at roughly the same time as he did. The highlight of this program is Symphony No. 13 in D major from 1763, whose orchestration includes four horns and whose final movement foreshadows, by twenty-five years, the famous theme from Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony. The violin concerto in C major bears the following note in Haydn’s catalogue of works: “made for Luigi” (“fatto per il luigi”), a dedication to Luigi Tomasini (1741-1808), a brilliant virtuoso violinist born in Pesaro and a friend of the composer. With the Kammerorchester Basel and under the direction of Giovanni Antonini, it is another baroque violin virtuoso, the young Dmitri Smirnov, who, two centuries later, brilliantly champions this repertoire.
