Schubert's music is a natural human phenomenon, the simultaneous expression of unfathomable creation and the human soul; hope, reason, and above all desire form a perfect union: an almost inconceivable wealth of melodies, rhythms, and harmonies create a passionate musical universe, from which indifference is banished. Gilbert Schuchter is the first, and so far the only musician to interpret these piano works in the lineage of Franz Schubert's Lieder, emphasizing their lyrical and epic attitude and the dancing element – particularly the waltz. The measure bar does not play a dominant role in Schubert, and a freely modulated tempo is essential for a true interpretation; this music is not elitist, it is boundless, it "speaks all languages." That is why this production, made in Vienna during the years 1968-1970 on a Bösendorfer piano, in the studio of the Casino Baumgarten, has lost none of its validity in 2017.
