Endowed with great sensitivity, Gilbert Laffaille often writes songs where you can feel the pleasure of rhyming and clashing words: 'La Faute à personne', 'La ballade des pendules', 'C.Q.F.D'. He also takes pleasure in writing ironic or biting lyrics, with which he denounces situations that revolt him: 'Neuilly Blues', 'Le Président et l'Éléphant', 'Dents d'ivoire et peau d'ébène'... Finally, he sometimes expresses himself in a poetic, intimate and very personal register ('Tout m'étonne', 'Neige', 'La Tête ailleurs'), but also in that of the most unbridled fantasy, flirting with the absurd and surrealism as in La Java sans modération or les bigoudis par douze. More rarely, he dares to be serious: 'Le Maître d'école', 'De l'autre côté du mur', 'La Foire du trône'.
