The choice of repertoire for his late debut on Deutsche Grammophon was quickly made: Herbert Blomstedt is the world’s longest-serving conductor and remains one of the most dynamic. He chose Franz Schubert’s last two symphonies. Accompanied by the Gewandhaus Orchestra, which he led as Gewandhauskapellmeister from 1998 to 2005 and with which he has since remained closely associated as honorary conductor.
