Description
César Franck considered The Beatitudes, for soloists, choirs, and orchestra, as his major work. It may be the example of the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach that prompted him to embark in 1869 on the composition of a fresco that would also be dominated by the voice of Christ. Franck worked for ten years on this vast score that renews in an original and personal way the genre of the oratorio in France in the 19th century. It is not simply the musical illustration of a subject drawn from the gospel. Because The Beatitudes, which were the rules of life for the composer, inspired him to create bold and personal music, animated by the ideal of justice that it sings in unforgettable accents.As part of the bicentennial César Franck 1822-2022 of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège (OPRL).
