Retrospective Gaston Coute 1977-2008

Description

From the plains of Beauce to the cabarets of Montmartre, Gaston Couté, a young libertarian poet, son of peasants, who died at 31 in 1911, left behind a body of work of rare and astonishing humanist power. The gâs qu'a mal tourné, as he defines himself, proclaims in French or in his Beauceron dialect the disillusionment of France in the Belle Epoque, an unequal society undergoing industrialization, bellicose and nationalist.
A unique sense of words and rhythm gives his work a modern and universal symbolism. This retrospective traces over thirty years the exploratory journey of Gérard Pierron, an “artisan artist” and precious melodist. His work of interpreting and setting to music the works of Gaston Couté (which occupies a central place in his artistic journey) bears witness to a formidable and invigorating enhancement of intangible heritage.
