The historic Decca recording of Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung conducted by Sir Georg Solti is the most famous classical recording in history. It is the best-selling opera recording in the world, a recording project of unprecedented scale, and the very first studio recording of Wagner's masterpiece, which took seven years to complete, from 1958 to 1965. Solti and the legendary Decca producer John Culshaw assembled a dream cast, featuring the greatest Wagnerian voices of the time: Kirsten Flagstad, George London, Hans Hotter, Birgit Nilsson, Wolfgang Windgassen, James King, Régine Crespin, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Christa Ludwig, Lucia Popp, Gwyneth Jones, Brigitte Fassbaender, and Joan Sutherland. A perfect marriage of art and technology, setting new standards for both opera recordings and the possibilities of stereo use, Solti's Ring is still considered the benchmark more than six decades later. Ten years after the last remastering of this colossal work, a brand new set of high-definition 24-bit/192 kHz transfers from the original tapes has been employed.
Each opera in the cycle is presented in new deluxe editions – on vinyl (half-speed mastering) and hybrid SACD (24-bit/192 kHz) – accompanied by sumptuous booklets including original photographs from the sessions, facsimiles of the original scores from the conductor and producer, unpublished documents from the recording sessions, as well as complete synopses and booklets.
