Alexandria, 48 BC: Caesar arrives in Egypt and is presented with the decapitated head of his rival Pompey. What follows is an opera about power, revenge, and seduction; Cleopatra at war for the throne against her brother Ptolemy; the widow and son of Pompey obsessed with vengeance and Cleopatra seducing Caesar under the guise of Virtue surrounded by the Muses. The English Concert and Harry Bicket continue their epic dedicated to Handel on Linn with this complete, unabridged, and rarely recorded full version of Giulio Cesare. Christophe Dumaux sings the role of Caesar and Louise Alder that of Cleopatra, along with Beth Taylor, Paula Murrihy, John Holiday, Morgan Pearse, Meili Li, and Thomas Chenhall. This recording is the culmination of an international tour. After the musicians' concert at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times stated: "This ensemble is the benchmark in Handel."
