Sonate à Violoncello Solo Col Basso Continuo

Description

Antonio Caldara (1670/71-1736) was born in Venice. The son of the violinist Giuseppe Caldara, he is believed to have been a student of Giovanni Legrenzi. Throughout the thirty-five or forty years of his creative life, vocal music was his main focus – whether it was his cantatas, operas, oratorios, or liturgical pieces. However, Caldara began his career in the late 1680s as a cellist at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, and he briefly returned to his instrument just 18 months before his death. Composed five years before the publication of the famous cello sonatas written by the most renowned Venetian, Antonio Vivaldi, the collection of sixteen sonatas by Antonio Caldara makes a significant contribution to the repertoire of solo cello sonatas from the late Baroque period. In this recording, the selected pieces are marked by the maturity and experience of the composer and reveal a refined art, with a fluid and flexible melodic style, and harmony rich in chromaticism, imbued with a strong spirit of independence.
